Stay at the romantic 1840 Inn on the Main in the historic district of Canandaigua, NY. The Victorian-style bed and breakfast offers restful luxury where two can enjoy peace and quiet in the Finger Lakes region. Being centralized in the village, the Inn is the closest bed and breakfast to shopping, Sonnenberg Gardens, and Canandaigua Lake. Take a beautiful walk to the lake or the Granger Homestead and Carriage Museum and visit the unique shops along the way.

Although quaint in appearance, the Inn is modernized with central air, smart TVs, and WiFi throughout. Each of the five renovated suites has its own private bathroom and most have a picturesque fireplace and/or jacuzzi. The Inn is the ideal place to stay if you are in need of a weekend of blissful relaxation.

The Inn’s Timeline

1820

The original farmhouse was built by a gentleman named Thomas Burt where the property served as a 14-acre fruit farm. At the front of the property, where the Inn now sits, was a brick building where the original homeowner Henry F. Penfield, Esquire practiced law.

Penfield sold the property to James C. Smith, Esquire who later became a justice of the Supreme Court and occupied his seat for 34 years.

The Inn portion of the home was built.

1900

Smith passed away and prominent attorney Maynard N. Clement acquired the property.

1911

Clement left the Canandaigua area to accept an appointment as state excise commissioner and sold the Inn to Dr. and Mrs. Dwight R. Burrell.

1921

Mrs. Burrell passed away and the home was sold to Stewart Brooks Hubbell.

1944

Joseph W. Cribb, who became a prominent judge in Canandaigua, acquired the property from Mr. Hubbell's estate.

1945

Cribb sold off a portion of the property to Alfred Morris Gifford. The Inn and original farmhouse were converted to apartments at this time.

The home temporarily held a real estate office before becoming a private residence again.

The property was restored to its original Victorian allure and bed and breakfast. All the owners during this time have maintained a remarkable reputation for customer service and respect for the history the home retains.
